What’s in a smile?
A great deal apparently, especially if you have a great big, bright smile. It could be your ticket to a better career and improved love life. Sound farfetched or too good to be true? Well, not according to researchers.
Oral B recently conducted a study with over 2,000 men and women and determined that a great smile with whiter teeth made people seem more attractive and also appear younger. It was revealed that individuals with “beautiful smiles” were viewed to be much more attractive than their counterparts.
You have only seconds to make that first impression and the initial impressions you make actually have significant impact. The impressions and perceptions that result are powerful. Research has proven that people with beautiful smiles are perceived to be brighter, healthier, wealthier and more desirable than their smile challenged counterparts.
These positive impressions about your attractiveness have a direct impact on your successful interpersonal interactions both socially and professionally. There is a validated link between your smile and success.
To put it simply - a nice smile is more likely to get you the job and get you your Prince (or Princess) Charming!
A lovely smiles makes you seem more attractive
Dr. Gordon Patzer, Ph. D. has dedicated his career to researching this phenomenon, aptly named the Physical Attractiveness Phenomenon (PAP), which underscores the premise that physical attractiveness greatly benefits the individual and that the reality is that what you look like – and more importantly, how your looks are perceived by others – impacts your life in numerous positive ways.
A beautiful smile is one of the first things people notice about you and it has a direct correlation on how others view you and make assumptions about you. These perceptions include, but are not limited to, increased attractiveness, intelligence, health and heightened social status.
Studies conducted by Kelton Research at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California validated that individuals with whiter and brighter smiles had better outcomes in both romance and employment.
That cheesy grin can get you a better job
University of California researchers published a research study in the December 2014 issue of the Journal of Economic Psychology that noted how a beautiful smile translates into a more successful career, which proves that people perceived as “more attractive” make more money (12.7%) than people perceived to be less attractive.
Researchers also found that during job interviews the individual deemed “more attractive” was perceived to be a better candidate for the position even if they were technically less qualified. Again, remember that one of the most important elements in judging someone’s “attractiveness” was their smile. Simply put, a beautiful smile can help you be more successful.
A smile is in the eye of the beholder
So, let’s put this all into perspective. Your smile is the first thing that people notice about you and research supports that a pretty smile is core to being viewed as attractive. If you are perceived as “attractive” then people make certain inherent assumptions about you based on this.
The perceptions that are made about you based on your great smile can be instrumental in getting a job and increasing your desirability and getting that first date. Ultimately, this has the potential to have a huge impact on your personal and professional life.
Smile your way to a happier life
So what does your smile say about you? It says more than you could have even imagined. It starts a non-verbal dialogue the minute someone encounters you.
A great smile also has the ability to create and sustain self-confidence. A great smile can give you opportunities whether due to the Physical Attractiveness Phenomenon or due to your bolstered self-confidence.
Obviously, a great smile is not the only thing that matters. You are going to have to do the , whether it is in the workplace or in your personal life, but your amazing pearly whites and that great friendly smile can give you that “leg up” and advantage. Couple that with your confidence and you can rule the world.
A great smile also appears to show reflection of inner happiness and contentment. A recent study followed up on a group of women thirty years after their yearbook pictures. They focused on women who appeared to have a genuine smile versus women who did not. The study concluded that the women who appeared to have genuine beautiful smiles went on to have happier marriages and greater well-being than those who did not have great smiles.
- So smile.
- Invest in your smile.
- Be confident.
- The benefits are amazing.
There is a saying by an unknown author that sums it up:
“Life is like a mirror. We get the best results when we smile at it.”
