Keeping in mind all the things you are grateful for is extremely important – and while we tend to forget the million reasons we can be happy during a bad day, the International Day of Happiness was created to make up for all those arduous days, when you just run out of motivation. Learn more about this important day and make the most of it with these easy ideas and tips!
Happiness Day (20th March) was created to raise awareness globally about the importance of peace, well-being and joy. Founded in 2012, by the United Nations General Assembly, this day focuses on the positive side of life. - "At this time of grinding poverty and other manmade causes of suffering, the International Day of Happiness is a global chance to assert that peace, well-being and joy deserve primacy."
The Organization’s 10 Keys to Happiness
Besides creating this international day for us, the organization also gathered the ten most important aspects that will help you overcome your sadness and cherish happiness around you.
1. Awareness
Being aware of all the positive aspects in your life is the first step to happiness and being able to be aware of others around us.
2. Trying Out
Never stay in your comfort zone for too long and don’t be afraid to try out new things! Always wanted to try out yoga or a new hair color? 20th March is the perfect time to do that!
3. Giving
Trust us, giving feels amazing. That dress that has been sitting in your wardrobe for three months with its tag on or that old microwave you know you’ll never use anymore…it’s time to find new homes for them!
4. Relating
Being aware of not only your situation, but others around you will help you relate to them and understand your environment better.
5. Exercising
Fit body, fit mind. Working out might not be that fun, but spend 1 hour with your favorite work-out routine (even if it’s dancing around in your room) during the International Day of Happiness!
6. Direction
It’s absolutely okay to feel lost sometimes, but make sure that you spend time with thinking about your motivations and goals in life. These will give you that little extra direction you’ll need for happiness.
7. Resilience
Show the world how tough you are by standing up, no matter what happens. Don’t let bad moments ruin this day for you!
8. Emotions
Whether we like it or not, we can’t make our emotions disappear, so instead of ignoring them, appreciate your feelings.
9. Acceptance
It might sound a bit of a cliché, but acceptance is probably the best way to overcome all your anger.
10. Meaning
Accepting things without thinking about their aims and meanings is almost impossible.
Celebrate This Day Like a Queen
Make this day count and do anything that will bring a smile to your face. Besides saying goodbye to all your fears and insecurities (at least for this day), try to look on the positive side of things and celebrate your own joys and happy moments in life! Instead of taking your espresso as a shot in the morning, spend 10 extra minutes with your breakfast before going to work. Choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and don’t forget to constantly remind yourself of every little detail that you are grateful for. You love the area where you live? You have an amazing co-worker? You can’t wait to go to that dance class after work? These are all small details that can contribute to your personal happiness. Empower others as well – this day is about everyone.
The Importance of a Bright Smile
Who could forget to smile on the International Day of Happiness? Showing off your pearly white teeth will not only show that you are confident, but will also make other people smile.
